Second Helpings’ staff and volunteers are champions to prevent food waste. When we explored where food was being wasted we identified two new areas: tourists and people moving out of the area. We are now a site where small volumes of donated nonperishable food items can be dropped off on Hilton Head Island. (We also accept nonperishables!) The challenge was that donated food was routinely dropped off on Fridays when most of our partner agencies were closed. We had to search for a safe place to store perishables. This is where Friends of Callawassie came to the rescue. They awarded us a grant to purchase a refrigerator/freezer to place in our office.
