SC Secretary of State Designates Second Helpings as a 2013 Angel Charity

“In recognition of exceptional service to the cause they represent and the outstanding

percentage of expenditures towards the cause in relation to overall expenditures.”

The South Carolina Secretary of State, the Honorable Mark Hammond, has just bestowed Second Helpings with the prestigious “Angel” Award. Every year, the Secretary of State honors several charitable organizations as “Angels,” specifically nonprofit organizations which use at least 80 percent of their contributions for their charitable services, have been in existence for three years or more, make good use of volunteer assistance, and do not rely heavily on government grants or grants from other organizations. Second Helpings is honored to have won this award.  (See the attached Form 990 for the details of our financial structure.)

Many thanks go to:

·         Our army of volunteers, past and present, for their hard work and dedication to our mission.

·         Our food donors- Atlanta Bread, Bi Lo, Fresh Market, Harris Teeter, Publix, Big Lots, Sam’s Club and Walmart.

·         Our financial donors.  We are good stewards of your money!

                            You are the real "Angels"!

Welcome to our New Executive Director, Maureen Korzik

New Executive Director Maureen Korzik receiving a check from the Marth McMillan and Rita Welsh of the Palmetto Electric Foundation.
We thank the foundation for their support.

After an extensive search, we’re pleased to announce that Maureen Korzik of Port Royal Plantation on Hilton Head Island has joined Second Helpings as Executive Director.
Maureen and her husband Tom have been coming to HH the past nine years. When it was time for Tom to retire, HH was a natural destination. Maureen made it clear – she is not yet ready to retire.

Church of the Cross

One of our major recipients is the Church of the Cross in Bluffton. They have an outstanding food distribution program to 130-150 families, all done by their dedicated volunteers. We have been their partner since they first opened the door years ago. They collect canned food from the church congregation and fresh food from us.  They give coffee and pastries when the people arrive. The children from the church school volunteer by carrying the bags for the people to their car or the bus they come on. Our Sun City and Hilton Head trucks deliver a majority of the food they distribute. Yea for partnerships!
