Second Helpings Names Two New Board Members

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC, September 15, 2025 – Second Helpings has elected two local leaders to its board of directors.

Kelly Brown (above, at left) is a lifelong resident of the Lowcountry who lives in Hampton County with her husband, Kevin and their granddaughter Lily. Brown’s passion for helping others started early—she began volunteering at Hilton Head Humane at age 16. During her 17-year career as lead paralegal at the Anderson & Brown Law Firm, Brown maintained significant community involvement. After she retired in 2023, she founded the Animal Care Fund of Hampton County. Under her leadership, more than 400 community cats have been spayed or neutered through TNR (trap-neuter-return) efforts in less than two years. She is an active Hampton County Rotarian and a member of the Magnolia Garden Club of Varnville.

Brown expects to bring the same energy, compassion, and deep sense of purpose to her work with Second Helpings. “I have always associated food with love—the love of family and friends, and the nurturing and healing it can bring. My children and grandchildren often say, ‘Nobody leaves Gaga’s house hungry.’ If I could, I would feed the whole world. Volunteering with Second Helpings gives me a chance to start right here in the Lowcountry, sharing that same love and care with my community.”

Kim Nicholson (above, at right) of Beaufort volunteers for Second Helpings at the Port Royal Farmers’ Market. She and her husband, Keith, are also Second Helpings truck volunteers. Nicholson recently retired from the agribusiness industry, where she achieved much success in strategy, general management, sales, operations, and marketing. She was most recently Vice President of Ag Technology and Innovation for The Mosaic Company. Nicholson has served on the board of Rantizo (provider of drone technology solutions for agriculture) and three venture capital firms. She is an advisory board member of the Cultivator AgTech Accelerator. She earned a Bachelor of Science, Soil and Crop Sciences from Purdue University.

“I have enjoyed volunteering on the trucks here in Beaufort, with the Port Royal Farmers’ Market team and on special events like the Fresh Express and Chicken Run,” Kim said. “I studied agronomy and production agriculture and spent nearly 40 years in agribusiness following my passion for feeding people.  Second Helpings has provided me with a unique way to continue to follow my passion and to serve the community.”

Amy Colin, executive director, welcomes the skills and perspectives of these two new board members. “Kelly provides us with great insight into the needs, challenges, and opportunities in our service area, particularly Hampton County. Kim brings a wealth of business knowledge and practical experience as a truck and farmers’ market volunteer to our board. As we continue to grow our outreach efforts and find more sources of food, the knowledge and strengths of these two individuals will enable us to work even closer with volunteers, food donors, and agencies to help feed those who are hungry.”
