HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (October 27, 2025) – The government shutdown means more families are turning to local nonprofit pantries and soup kitchens for food. Second Helpings, the only nonprofit food rescue organization serving Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton counties, is ramping up efforts to provide food for these agencies.
Second Helpings has established a secure website for donations to provide food during this time. That website is https://www.secondhelpingslc.org/donate. Also, checks made payable to Second Helpings can be mailed to PO Box 23621, Hilton Head Island, SC 29925.
Following the South Carolina Department of Social Services’ recent announcement that November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds are being held due to the federal shutdown, many of Second Helpings’ agency partners have experienced a sharp increase in requests for assistance, depleting their food supplies.
Donations to Second Helpings will be used to purchase food in bulk at a discount to help restock the 55 food pantries, soup kitchens, and family and senior programs in the three-county area.
Amy Colin, Executive Director, is asking the community to be generous in their support. “If your family has enough food, please help those in our community who are struggling to provide food for their families. Especially as we enter the holidays, offer thanks by giving! Financial and food donations to Second Helpings and local pantries are essential to supporting families through this difficult period.”
