Second Helpings No Contact Rescue Protocol –

Volunteers and Food Rescue Operations

Thank you, to our volunteers, for your service to the community.

Second Helpings is a “life-sustaining” organization and will continue operating during the COVID-19 crisis as long as we can do so safely. We so appreciate our volunteers and their efforts during this period.

We take the health and safety of our community very seriously and want to remind you of key protocols regarding the pick-up and drop-off of food donations. The guidelines below are to be followed by all volunteers regarding the handling and distribution of food.

We will adhere to a NO CONTACT RESCUE. Below are the steps to complete.

As a reminder, all staff/volunteers must adhere to social distancing throughout the day, even when not rescuing food. In accordance to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), here are guidelines to aid in prevention, and are to be followed by all staff/volunteers:

• If you OR ANYONE YOU HAVE BEEN IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH in the last two weeks are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, please stay home. Contact your coordinator and inform them that you cannot make it.
• Maintain at least six feet of distance between yourself and others at all times.
• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not readily available.
• Avoid touching your nose, eyes and mouth.
• Frequently clean all surfaces that will touch the food or food packaging and ALL heavily touched areas and items (door knobs, sink handles, car steering wheels, your phone), with an alcohol-based disinfectant.
• Once you wear the gloves provided, if you do touch your face or your phone, remove your gloves, wash your hands again, and put new gloves on before touching any food or food packaging.

Food Door Pickup and Delivery Process

Arrival at a Food Donor Location

1. After arriving at the donor, notify the donor you have arrived by calling or texting – the number is in your notebook
2. Receive food from the donor:
3. Donor/Receiver will bring the food outside to establish no contact pick-up location. You may have to enter the store to retrieve dairy products and meats but maintain six feet of distance
4. Do not enter the donor’s location, if at all possible
5. Load the truck making sure you are wearing gloves, cloth ones work
6. Single use gloves are available inside the truck and so are masks

Travel to Recipient Agency

1. Follow the instructions to the recipient agency’s address
2. You may call the agency prior to let them know you are on your way or when you arrive at the location

Arrival at Recipient Agency

1. When you arrive at the drop-off, park in a safe location
2. Text or call to let them know you have arrived
3. Put on single use gloves
4. Place the delivery on the porch or by the front of the agency door or in their parking lot
5. The agency volunteers will accept the delivery after you return to the truck or your vehicle.

Make sure you have ZERO CONTACT between you and the recipient

1. Do not enter any buildings
2. Record the delivery and pounds
3. Take gloves off and discard
4. RESCUE COMPLETE!

Wash hands or use hand sanitizer and disinfect your car and the truck often. Thank you!

Bulk Food Orders

With grant funding Second Helpings is working with agencies to place orders for meats, produce and protein products. These orders will come to a designated site and the agencies that placed orders will come to that site to retrieve their orders. The sites will be determined based on the vendor and the agencies and volunteers will be notified prior to the day of dropoff.

The agencies will be notified on the date of the dropoff.

1. Bulk orders from food suppliers will arrive at one of the three locations.
2. The agency will be notified where to go to pick up their orders.
3. The orders will be sorted and placed six feet apart prior to the agency representatives arriving on site.
4. Volunteers from the agency will be instructed to accept the delivery standing six feet apart from Second Helpings’ volunteers.
