Second Helpings Presents Supporter of the Year Award to Leslie and JR Richardson

At an event celebrating the rescue and distribution of 50 million pounds of food, Second Helpings presented its Supporter of the Year Award for 2023. The Richardson Group was recognized for outstanding support of the nonprofit and its efforts to fight hunger in the Lowcountry. Second Helpings recently rescued and distributed its 50 millionth pound of food since our start in 1991. That translates into enough food for 40 million meals over the 31 years.

JR and Leslie Richardson of the Richardson Group have made many generous contributions to Second Helpings. These include sponsoring the Souper Bowl of Caring fundraiser each year since 2019 at Coligny Plaza. This fundraiser has raised more than $25,000 for Second Helpings while engaging the community in supporting food rescue. The 2024 Souper Bowl of Caring will be held Saturday, Feb. 10, from 1-4 pm. Local restaurants will serve their favorite soups for guests to enjoy. Tickets are available at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/souperbowl-of-caring-2024-tickets-775195660087?aff=ebdsoporgprofile.

Coligny Plaza’s 2023 Rock ‘N Ribs event in October also benefited Second Helpings. At this four-day event at Coligny Plaza, participants enjoyed music and BBQ, with part of the proceeds going to Second Helpings and the Carl Ruiz Foundation.

Second Helpings Executive Director Marcus Tanner described Leslie and JR Richardson as “true champions of Second Helpings. We have consistently turned to the Richardson Group for help through the years and they have always answered with exceptional offers of assistance. In this year when we celebrate the rescue and distribution of our 50 millionth pound of food since our start in 1991, we wanted to present our Supporter of the Year award to these long-time heroes.”
