Second Helpings is bringing back its tourist food rescue program – Post-Vacation Food Donation – for a third summer. This year, it has a fresh new look and an even easier way for tourists and locals to donate. Specially-marked donation bins are being placed at convenient places around Hilton Head Island, making it simple to drop off unopened, nonperishable groceries at any time.
The goal is to collect food that Second Helpings will deliver to one of the seven food pantries and soup kitchens that serve those who are food insecure on Hilton Head Island. The program launched in 2023 with tremendous support from rental agencies, Grayco, and the community.
Starting May 24, food can be dropped off in one of the specially-marked bins. Bin locations are still being added, so scan the QR code below to find the complete list.
Amy Colin, Executive Director, said “We’re excited about the expansion of the food drop-off bins to more locations around the Island. With the help of Coligny Plaza and Palmetto Dunes, we realized last year that the bins were a convenient way for tourists to donate food. And, thanks to rental management companies and others in the community who helped us get the word out, the program is expanding just as the need for food is growing. Some 5,000 people on Hilton Head Island are struggling with hunger.”
The bins will replace the Saturday morning food collections in the Grayco parking lot.
Help spread the word! The flyer describing the effort is attached. To learn more about Second Helpings and how you can get involved, go to www.secondhelpingslc.org.
