Second Helpings Welcomes Three New Board Members

Renata Johnson Green is the principal of Ridgeland Elementary School in Jasper, a position she’s held for nearly 12 years. Under her leadership, the school’s SC Report Card Rating has risen substantially, to Average, and has been named a Points of Light Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and a National Beta Club School of Distinction. A career educator, she also has 10 years of teaching experience, and was named Teacher of the Year twice. Green holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, a Master of Arts in Teaching and Master of Science in Education Administration, and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership. She is a member of the SC Association of School Administrators Board of Directors and secretary of King Branch Baptist Church.

Second Helpings’ mission fits well with Green’s focus on education and student well-being. “It’s extremely important that we put food in the hands of parents and grandparents, so that our students can come to school fed and ready for teaching and learning,” she said. “I wholeheartedly accept this position and will work diligently to fight against hunger in the entire Lowcountry!”

John Shoulders recently moved to Hilton Head from Roanoke, VA, where he had been Senior Vice President of Business Affairs for Feeding Southwest Virginia (an affiliate of Feeding America) until his retirement in 2021. Prior to that, Shoulders was a commercial bank lender and executive officer with Wells Fargo and Truist banks and then formed a private commercial investment company. A graduate of Virginia Tech and recipient of multiple banking industry certifications, Shoulders also served on numerous nonprofit boards throughout his career.

Since moving to Hilton Head, John has joined First Presbyterian Church and the Hilton Head Rotary Club, and has volunteered at two local food pantries. “I want to help improve people’s lives, especially those who are food-insecure,” Shoulders said. “With Second Helpings, I feel I can have a larger impact.”

Kathryn Weismantel is the Chief Marketing Officer of IKS Health, a trusted innovator in healthcare technology and care enablement. Prior to that, she was Head of Marketing, Americas, at Oliver Wyman, a global management consulting firm. Weismantel’s nonprofit experience includes serving as a marketing advisor to the Executive Director of Fullers Center for Housing in Clarksdale, MS, where she also volunteered building homes in the 9th poorest county in the US. She holds an MBA from Northwestern University and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame.

“Second Helpings is the unseen backbone of hunger relief in the Lowcountry,” Weismantel remarked. “I look forward to helping this organization tell its story so that more people see how vital it is to ending hunger in the Lowcountry.”

Amy Colin, executive director, welcomes the skills and perspectives of these three new board members. “Renata provides us with a Jasper County perspective and a view into the ways Second Helpings and our agency partners can work with local schools to reach and serve our neighbors in need. John is a seasoned business executive with very relevant food bank operating experience with a Feeding America affiliate. Kathryn’s extensive experience in marketing and engaging audiences is certain to increase the community’s understanding and appreciation of how Second Helpings fights hunger and food waste. As we work to bring more food to more of our neighbors in need, the knowledge and strengths of these three new board members will enable us to work closer with volunteers, food donors, and agencies to help feed those who are hungry.”
