Second Helpings to Celebrate New Food Rescue Truck #17 with Community Ribbon Cutting
New refrigerated truck will help rescue millions of pounds of food for Lowcountry neighbors over the next decade.
BLUFFTON, S.C. — Second Helpings will celebrate the newest addition to its food rescue fleet, Truck #17, with a community ribbon cutting on Wednesday, September 30, at 9:30 a.m. in the Sam’s Club Bluffton parking lot. Community members, volunteers, supporters, food and agency partners, and the generous donors who helped make the new truck possible are invited to join the celebration.
Truck #17 represents much more than a new vehicle. Refrigerated trucks are at the heart of Second Helpings’ food rescue operation, traveling throughout Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton counties to collect surplus food from grocery stores, retailers, farms, and other food donors and
deliver it, free of charge, to local food pantries and nonprofit partners.
Second Helpings’ fleet of 10 refrigerated trucks travels more than 90,000 miles each year. On average, each truck helps rescue and distribute approximately 300,000 pounds of food annually. With an expected service life of approximately 10 years, Truck #17 has the potential to help move
more than three million pounds of food to Lowcountry neighbors during its time on the road. And none of those miles happen without volunteers. Every Second Helpings truck route relies on members of the organization’s team of more than 500 volunteers, who give their time to drive
trucks, collect rescued food and make deliveries throughout the community.
“Every time one of our trucks pulls onto a route, it connects food that might otherwise go to waste with an organization that provides it to those who need it,” said Amy Colin, Executive Director of Second Helpings. “Truck #17 will be doing that work for years to come, and we are incredibly
grateful to the donors and partners whose generosity made that possible.”
The need for food continues to grow. Today, food distributed through Second Helpings helps serve more than 14,000 people each week. Since 1992, Second Helpings has rescued and distributed more than 59 million pounds of food for Lowcountry neighbors in need.
Truck #17 will help Second Helpings continue that work while safely transporting fresh produce, dairy, proteins and other perishable foods that are especially valuable to local pantry partners and the people they serve.
The September 30 ribbon cutting will also recognize the donors and partners whose generosity helped purchase Truck #17. Supporters who helped make the truck possible will have the opportunity to sign the inside of the truck, leaving a lasting reminder of the community behind it before it begins the next decade of service.
